About Joshua8.AI
A founder-led studio that builds, backs, and ships AI ventures
What We Do
Build & Invest
We build the MVP and back each venture with capital, taking it from concept to a Series A raise. After the raise we stay on as investor, advisor, and board member.
Technical & Hardware Lab
A 4,500 sq ft lab—GPU compute, machine shop, and RF/electronics bench—that takes ventures from concept to shipped physical product.
We also take a small number of select AI advisory engagements, drawing on the same expertise we use to build our own products.
How We Build
- ✓ We build the MVP that takes each venture to its Series A, then stay on as investor, advisor, and board member
- ✓ We back ventures with capital and hands-on engineering
- ✓ An in-house technical and hardware lab, from prototype to physical product
- ✓ Deep expertise in local AI, GPU compute, RF, and embedded systems

The Story Behind Joshua8.ai
Our name, Joshua8.ai, draws inspiration from a historical event recorded in the ancient text of Joshua, chapter 8. In this account, Joshua, a skilled leader, devises a clever ambush to capture the city of Ai. After an initial setback, his strategic retreat lures the enemy out, allowing hidden forces to seize and secure the city—a triumph of intellect and planning.
Joshua: Symbolizes strategic leadership and innovative thinking.
8: Refers to the chapter detailing this victory through adaptability.
.ai: Nods to the city of Ai while aligning with artificial intelligence, reflecting our mission to conquer complex challenges with smart solutions.
Joshua8.ai embodies this legacy of strategy and success, empowering businesses to overcome obstacles with cutting-edge AI technology.
Our Mission
We build AI ventures and the technology behind them, taking each from concept to a Series A raise by building the MVP that proves it. We'd rather build and fund focused AI products than sell hype—and our technical and hardware lab lets us do exactly that. Once a venture is funded, we stay on as investor, advisor, and board member while others lead later rounds. Explore our companies.
Jim Smith, Managing Member
Jim Smith spent the past two decades investing in technology companies for a strategic investment firm, and as a consultant for venture capital, private equity, and corporations. He previously held VP, engineering and director of technology roles with Fortune 500 companies including L-3 Communications, Honeywell and AlliedSignal. He co-founded Transparent Networks, a silicon-valley based developer of switches for all optical networks. Early in his career, Dr. Smith, a registered professional engineer, developed a number of MEMS-based technologies and components at Sandia National Laboratories. He has held board positions in the technology industry with companies such as Silicon Sense, WiSpry, Etherstack, Hypres, PlusN, and Tendril Networks. He earned his Ph.D. in engineering from Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Smith also earned an MBA, is a senior member of the IEEE, and is a licensed commercial pilot (AMEL and UAS).
The Problem We Solve
95% of AI investments fail because they're unfocused.
According to MIT research, the vast majority of generative AI pilots fail to deliver measurable returns. Why? Lack of focus, poor implementation, dependency on unstable providers, and insufficient customization.
It's why we build and fund our own focused AI products instead of chasing hype—purpose-built, well-capitalized, and aligned with a real problem. See what we're building.
Our Values
🎯 Focus
We build products that solve one real problem well—targeted and measurable, never broad and unfocused.
🛠️ Ownership
Skin in the game. We build the MVP and fund each venture to its Series A, then stay invested as advisor and board member—our outcomes are tied to theirs.
🤝 Conviction
We back what we build—with capital, hands-on engineering, and a full technical and hardware lab.
